Motoman SDA10 Cooks its Way to the Kitchen

Robots are among the man’s fascinating creations which have made life easier and simpler for us. After proving their expertise on the industrial front, these amazing machines are now leaping towards the kitchen. Yaskawa Electric Corporation’s new-generation dexterous dual-arm industrial robot Motoman SDA10 was shown off at the latest International Next-Generation Robot Fair in Osaka for its skill in cooking okonomiyaki.

Measuring 4.5ft tall and 220 kg, the futuristic robot was designed to operate neck to neck with man in workplace. SDA10 has 15 joints in entirety, 7 in each arm and one in the torso. The joints enable it with wide range of movement useful for any job. The robot can proficiently assemble a disposable camera from two dozen parts in just 2 minutes. Not only this, it can turn into a chef and based on speech recognition technology, it takes your orders, prepares the okonomiyaki batter using utensils, then pours it on the iron grill, makes it into a pancake-like disc, tosses it like a professional and then applies condiments before serving it hot.
I sense that very soon in the future, we might see robots managing the kitchen not only in homes, but also hotels across the world.

Virtual Games Now A Reality For The Disabled

COGAIN, which is a European Union funded organization recently launched a state of the art software, that would enable users with severe motor disabilities to use the internet and other programs, with just a look of their eyes. This innovative technology that is known as the gaming-with-gaze software open up new avenues for the disabled, previously unperceived. Highly successful games such as, Second Life and World of Warcraft that employ this technology, will now be available to the the disabled users.

Patients suffering from life altering illness like, cerebral palsy, motor neurone disease (MND) or locked-in syndromes will now have an entire world right in front of them explore, with the help of their gaze and eye-tracking technology. This in turn, would be a “truly liberating experience”, according to Howell Istance, who helped develop the gaming-with-gaze software.

ero Blue Robot: A Silly Robot that Can Spoon Feed You!

I wonder where the world is leading these days! There is a robot that can literally feed you by picking up your food and putting it into your mouth. The robot is named “Aero-Blue robot”. It’s a personalized robot specially designed to feed its master. This robot can literally spoon feed you just the way your mother or nanny used to do for you while you were a small baby.
The robot is smart enough to perform certain activities including spoon feeding you. It can handle delicate objects like the eggs and. This is the heights of laziness. This is total nonsense and you do not require it unless you have movement problems. Aero Blue robot will make not only make you lazier but also inactive over a due course of time if you get used to feeding by it.
I wonder why this silly robot was ever designed. Who is anyways interested in getting spoon fed when you are already too old? There is no information announced with regard to it availability date and the cost of it. It might be expensive though considering it’s a robot. I really hope this was not designed at all.

MyDeskFriend: A Cool Robot for Your Desk from Arimaz

If you ever wished to have a robot as your companion at your work place right on your desk, then your wish may just come true. Recently, we came across a demo of a prototype of a cute penguin robot that was shown by Pierre Bureau, the founder and CEO of Arimaz in Switzerland. The robot is named as “MyDeskFriend” and it will be sold at $99 beginning from September.
The robot comes with various smart features like a docking station, which is hooked to the PC. The most interesting feature of the robot is that you can interact with it in many ways. It does the job of following your finger and detects the edges of your desk thereby helping it not fall off your desk. With the help of its accelerometer, it can sense when it’s being touched or shaken. Besides the five infrared sensors, the robot also changes its color depending on its mood. For example, if you shake it too much, its eyes turn red suggesting that it is in a bad mood.
Another interesting feature of the robot is that it can get connected to your Facebook profile and there you can see if it’s hungry, tired or needs exercise. If it’s hungry, you can feed a cookie. It can also read the weather forecast, news and messages from your friends. It can also memorize 10-15 words of your choice and also follow voice commands. Surely, this robot will prove to be one amazing companion, and i can’t wait for September to arrive.

Freewill Urban by Jinn Wong: Collapsible Trike

inn Wong has been worrying about the transportation rituals of people who are used to commuting long distances but still tend to harm the environment when travelling between two types of public transportation. The absence of a personal eco-friendly vehicle and long distances prompt people who travel by public transport to choose a taxi, etc.
Freewill Urban is a transportation concept designed by Wong as a commuting assistant from the train station to the next station or the final destination. This trike is powered by duo motors that control the two major wheels individually. Charged electronically, the scooter can be recharged between stations and is thus eco-friendly as being run without the use of a gas-emitting fuel. The project upon which the design is based is intends to encourage more people to travel via public transport, thereby reducing the use of non-renewable energy sources and their harmful effects upon the environment.
The use of Freewill Urban in transit would also be easy for the reason that the trike is collapsible and easy to carry. It includes space for a briefcase or laptop bag, something that professional would rarely step out of their homes without.

Robotic Fish Developed By Brit Scientists

British scientists have decided that they cannot spend time attaching tracking devices and cameras on fish, leaving instruments submerged in water or swimming around trying to collect. They have decided that the best information would be gained by the man-made fish population.
A robotic fish developed by the scientists will be released into the sea off the coast of North Spain. The 1.5 metre (5 feet) robotic fish is set to be left into rivers and lakes to detect hazardous pollutants in the water released from underwater pipelines. The robotic fish, which looks quite life like, can imitate the movements of fish and have chemical sensors which can detect pollutants. The information picked up by the fish would then be sent to the scientists via Wi-Fi technology.
The $29,000 robotic fish is extremely energy efficient, according to the team of scientists, and can travel underwater for hours on end. However, it is not yet know how the fish is being powered. Independently moving and not manipulated by remote, the robotic fish is undergoing testing and, if successful, more of these will be released into the Spanish waters.

Paul Hoc: World’s First Robotic Artist

For centuries, humans have prided themselves on being the only species to create art. Even though the most beautiful creations are those offered by nature, humans claim to be the best because artistic creation is not inherent in us.
With the advent of technology, humans have tried hard to hold on to the idea that only they can create art. Every day, though, we hear of technology taking over from us. Simulators and robotics are stepping up to walk in the footsteps of humans. Paul Hoc has a most human name, and the talent that he exhibits is almost as human. This artistic robot was designed by Objetgraphik for the 2008 Saint Etienne International Design Biennial. Paul Hoc moves over the canvas creating geometric designs with the precision only a machine can offer.
Paul Hoc looks like a small truck, quite delicate in appearance. However, his robotic arm holding a felt pen does not falter as he creates design after design. It is best to let the
video tell you more about the world’s first robotic artist.

ROBOTIC CHAIR

Robotic technology has come a long way from being something zany found only in science fiction novels to something that has become a part and parcel of everyday life. Now, the technology seems to have entered the sphere of office furniture and combines ergonomic science with good old robotic technology. The Oki Electric Industry Co Ltd has developed the ‘Leopard’ in collaboration with Okamura Corp. The Leopard is a concept chair that works on robotic technology wherein the seat area is analogous to a robot’s lap.
The developer’s claim that the experience of sitting on this chair is akin to being held in someone’s arms. The seating surface moves along with the occupant and makes the occupant believe he is being held comfortably. The Robot Leg technology, which is being used in this chair, has been created based on human hip bones, muscle and other bone structures which would behave as naturally as human bones and muscles would.
The Leopard is mounted on springs and can even jump, if the occupant desires so. The product is still being developed and a commercial launch can be expected in May 2009. However, the present chair can only accommodate a person who weighs between 55 and 60 kilos.
